CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN MINERALOGY

RESEARCH FACILITIES

Research facilities are centered in a series of specialized laboratories.

1) Geochemistry Laboratory

The laboratory has adequate facilities for geochemical analysis and is equipped with Atomic Absorption Spectrometer, Differential Thermal Analyzer, French-made SIGMA-CGR X-ray Diffractometer (currently out of order), X-Ray illuminator, pH-meters, Resistance Thermometers, Analytical Balances, Muffle Furnace, and Wet Pre-grinding Machine with necessary glassware and chemicals

 2) Petrography Laboratory

The laboratory has facilities for mineral and ore microscopy and is equipped with Polarizing Microscopes, Metallurgical and Inverted Metallurgical Microscopes, Zoom Stereo Microscopes, Automatic Point Counter, Mechanical Stage, and Rayner Refractometer.

 3) Geophysics Laboratory

The following equipment is available for geophysical surveys: Geoelectric Equipment, Seismic Data acquisition System, Self Potential Equipment, Portable Magnetometer.

 4) Cartography Laboratory

The laboratory has facilities for map drawing and is equipped with a large (A0) size tracing table and relevant tracing and drawing gadgets.

 5) Photography Laboratory

The laboratory has facilities for developing and printing black and white photographs.

 6) Museum

Specimens of selected rocks and minerals, mostly belonging to Balochistan are at display.

 7) Field Equipment

The Centre has a good collection of various kinds of field equipment required for geological/geophysical field work including Two 4x4 Toyota Jeeps, Equipment for geological surveys and geophysical surveys, Camping gear etc.

 8) Student’s Computer Laboratory is equipped with two (Pentium II) computers and a printer

 9) Computers

 Each Faculty member is provided with a PC computer (P-II and P-III) and a Printer. Similarly the Accounts and the Administrative offices are also provided with a one computer each for their office work.

 10) Internet & E-mail

The Centre has an official Internet Account with PTCL for the Faculty members and students.

11) Library

        The Centre has a spacious library which contains good collection of latest books and some journals related to the discipline Mineralogy and other discipline of Geology.
