The Department of Media Studies is housed in two buildings, one is called the old building while the second one is called FM building.
The old building house the BUBA, Balochistan University Broadcast academy, magazine production facility and campus newspaper unit and faculty offices. While the FM building and TV studio and the conference hall are in the new block.
We are the first University of Balochistan to establish a state of the art tv studio for the students of the department to have hands on training in the field of television. The students practically participate in recording news and talk shows. The facility is purely for the students to enhance their skills.
The Television Studio of the Department is well equiped with latest broadcast cameras having HD quality. The students get the oppertunity to learn camera functions in order to make short films, documentary and tv commercials.
It is matter honor to mention that our Department is the first in the province to have a Campus Radio, F.M 96.6 started the transmission in 2014. Its transmission covers the whole city of Quetta. The students plan, collect, edit and broadcast day to day campus activities while learning the various phases of radio production.
At the Department of Media Studies FM building we have two state of the art sound recording studios where various programs are recorded on daily basis using modern mixers and mics.
In modern times the presence of aerial shots in any documentary or film is expected by viewers, it beautifies the work. Drone camera brings amazing shots of nature can be seen with the help of drone camera which was never possible in past.
The editing labs are equipped with latest desktop computers which can handle the heavy workload of editing sound and film. The students record and edit theirs assignments on the computers.
The Meeting Room at the Department of Media Studies, University of Balochistan, serves as a hub for faculty discussions, board meetings, and editorial sessions. The Department of Media Studies provides a dedicated newspaper reading facility for students, offering access to leading Urdu and English dailies on a regular basis. This initiative aims to enhance students’ awareness of current affairs, journalistic styles, and media trends — an essential part of their academic and professional growth.
The lush green lawns of the Department offer a refreshing outdoor space where faculty and students can relax, engage in discussions, and enjoy the natural surroundings. These well-maintained lawns serve as a perfect setting for informal gatherings, study sessions, and outdoor academic activities. A modern conference hall with 100 seats capacity is another major facility for the Departments students and faculty. It is equiped with latest public address system with mixer and cordless mics. The venue is used for conferences, workshops, guest lectures and trainings.
The classrooms of the department have the capacity of 60 seats and are equipped with digital boards and multimedia to teach students in a better way in order to communicate the lectures more easily.
The newspapers archive room is housed in the old building of the department having a huge collection of national as well as local newspapers published in various languages. The archival record is of great importance for the researchers conducting research on various subjects. The students of the Department involved in research utilise the facility for references.
The library of the department has more than 2000 books written by emminent authors working in the field of mass communication. The library also have a collection of ebooks which are easily available for the students to study and prepare their assignments and research work.
