Green Youth Movement (GYM)


Green Youth Movement Club (GYM-Club UOB)

Green Youth Movement (GYM) program is initiated by the Higher Education Commission in Collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change. The primary goal is to mobilize the enormous potential of Pakistan's youth at universities and setup a club to make them active participants in environmental sustainability and climate action.

Objectives

To engage and organize youth in contributing to environmental conservation and a green economy through actions that encourage behavioral change and eco-innovation.

To mentor and support young eco-innovators at national, regional, and international levels, leveraging global breakthroughs in eco-innovation for Pakistan.

To assist universities in becoming living labs for green innovation and practices, such as deforestation, water management, and water conservation.

 GYM Club thematic areas:

1- Agriculture & Forestry

Plantation drives, kitchen gardening, on campus cultivation and gardening, native plant nursery, afforestation, community engagement & outreach, and sustainable farming.

2- Liquid and Solid Waste

Recycling and segregation, awareness and conservation, plastic-free uob, community cleanup drives, composting projects, and reduction of water pollution.

3- Water Conservation

Awareness & education campaigns, rainwater harvesting, campus lake/pond restoration project, and greywater reuse

4- Energy Conservation

Awareness & behavioural change campaigns, inter departmental energy conservation competition, LED replacement proposal, sensor & smart thermostat campaign, solarizing the campus.

5- Eco-Tourism

Eco-tours, campus biodiversity walking tour, skill-building & adventure-based activities, camping trips, wilderness & first aid certification course, cultural heritage and nature walk, beach clean-up & coastal hike, reforestation weekend.

Brief Description of the Event/Activity Outcome
1 Green Elections 11/2/2023 3 300 Students + Teachers + Admin Staff Green elections were conducted at UOB to promote sustainability and environmental awareness among students and staff. It increases Environmental Awareness, Engagement of Students in Sustainability, Promotion of Eco-friendly Practices, Reduction in Waste and Institutional Reputation
2 Tree Plantation 3/17/2024 10 60 Students + Teachers + Admin Staff A tree plantation activity involves planting trees at UOB to promote environmental sustainability, improve biodiversity, and combat the negative effects of climate change. The outcome is to enhance the environment by increasing green cover, improving air quality, and contributing to carbon sequestration.
3 Certificates & Panaflex 4/8/2024 0 0 Students Certificates of appreciation and participation were made for the students of GYM club UOB It increases Environmental Awareness, Engagement of Students in Sustainability, Promotion of Eco-friendly Practices, Reduction in Waste and Institutional Reputation
4 Blood Donation Drive 5/16/2024 2 90 Students An activity where students donate blood to help those in need, typically for medical emergencies, surgeries, or patients with chronic conditions. The outcome of the drive is to ensure a steady supply of blood for hospitals, clinics, and blood banks.
5 Kitchen Gardening Spring & summer 1 0 Focal person +Mali+ Chowkidar An activity of growing vegetables, herbs, and other edible plants at the vacant space of IMS garden. The outcome is to utilize the free space at IMS garden and have easy access to fresh, homegrown produce for daily use, while also promoting sustainability, health, and environmental awareness.
6 Installation of Bird's Houses 8/24/2024 2 40 Students + Focal Person It is an environmental activity focused on providing safe, sheltered spaces for birds at the trees of UOB. The outcome is to contribute to the conservation of birds and their habitats, while also promoting environmental awareness within communities.
7 Awareness session 10/17/2024 1 65 Students + Focal Person The activity aims to educate and inspire students to become active participants in environmental sustainability efforts and climate change. The outcome is to engage youth in understanding climate change, its impact, and how they can contribute to combating it through participation in the Green Youth Movement Club.
8 Installation of Bird's Houses 11/17/2024 2 70 Students + Focal Person It is an environmental activity focused on providing safe, sheltered spaces for birds at the trees of UOB. The outcome is to contribute to the conservation of birds and their habitats, while also promoting environmental awareness within communities.
9 Excavation for Trees 11/19/2024 2 0 Focal Person + Labor 30 holes were digged in the concrete with machines to ensure enough spaces for the plantation of trees, it's overall health and long-term survival The outcome is aforestation and greening efforts that contribute to a healthy and sustainable environment.
10 Tree Plantation 3/14/2025 8 30 VC+Students + Teachers + Admin Staff A tree plantation activity involves planting trees at UOB to promote environmental sustainability, improve biodiversity, and combat the negative effects of climate change. The outcome is to enhance the environment by increasing green cover, improving air quality, and contributing to carbon sequestration.
